FAQ's for Pickling & Passivation

Removal of Scales, welding burn marks, Oxide Formation and Heat Treatment Scales by use of Chemical Gels & Chemical Pastes is known as PICKLING.

The conversion of Chemically Active Surfaces of Stainless Steel into an inert / very less Reactive surface is known as Chemical Passivation. The chemical Resistance of SS on the surface is obtained by Absolute Cleaning and formation of a hydrous Oxide Film.
Stainless Steel is widely used in Chemical Plants & Machinery Equipments, Petrochemical Plants , Refinery Equipments, Food, Dairy, Pharmaceuticals & Beverages industries etc. For optimum use and long term durability, these SS Equipments should be totally free of Iron Particles. During Fabrication of Stainless Steel Equipments, IRON particles get impregnated into its structure due to Cutting / Turning / boring / drilling / bending / shearing / forming and welding operations. This reduces its functionality considerably and hence Pickling & Passivation is done to render the metal suitable for further treatment.
Pre-cleaning is a process of removal of Oil, Grease, dust, dirt, loose rust and foreign matter sticking to the metal surface. Removal of Oil and Grease is especially very important as these impurities make the surface of Steel Non-Permeable to Chemical Cleaning. Degreasing will very substantially improve Pickling & Passivation and Surface cleaning becomes very uniform.
Primary considerations are the grades of stainless steel being used and the size of the parts. The most important criteria of selection being
• COST per Kg
• Cleaning Efficiency
• Consumption
• Consistency
• Stability

Britoss is formulated using acids in very calibrated amounts and also contains softening agents which makes it very safe and user-friendly.

Direct use of concentrated acids (commercial grade) in addition to being toxic cause severe irritation to the throat and respiratory tract. Moreover these acids if used for Cleaning of Weld Joints, or for Pickling & Passivation of ANY GRADE OF STEEL, will lead to POST CLEANING CORROSION within 15 Days to 3 Months. These acids will also cause HYDROGEN EMBRITTLEMENT and will create POROSITY on SS Surface. This will lead to RUSTING OF SS Fabrications. Rusting is a SUB-SURFACE PHENOMENON and will lead to CREEPING CORROSION. Once the Metal or Fabrication starts rusting due to these Factors, Recovery becomes impossible / most expensive.

Note : Direct used of acids is to be avoided at all costs.

NO. SS pickling Products contain STRONG Acids & Oxidizing Chemicals. These Products must be handled after wearing all the safety Equipments.
YES. All SS Pickling Range products are completely Water Washable.
SS Pickling Products are to be used AS SUPPLIED WITHOUT ANY DILUTIONS.
Yes. Our Products are RoHS Compliant & Free from Halides & Sulphur.
These Products are acidic & Fuming in nature. The use of these chemicals shall be done in an OPEN AREA or highly ventilated areas. Do not use these products in HOT SUN LIGHT or Beyond 45 0C.
For BEST And OPTIMUM Results and performance , USE BRITOSS PRODUCTS within SIX MONTHS from the Date of Manufacture. Keep the Containers tightly closed with Inner and outer Lids. Store in a Cool & Dry Place.
SS Pickling Products are HIGHLY ACIDIC . Avoid Body Contact and avoid Spillage on Floor. The Products will attack Tiles, Stone, Marble, Granite, Glass, Wood, Laminations and Concrete & Cement Floorings. Wash the Spill Area with plenty of running water. Operators MUST USE ALL THE SAFETY GEARS (viz : Face Shield, Goggles , Face Mask, Rubber Apron, Full size Hand-Gloves, Gum-Boots Etc ), while working with these products.
It is utmost necessary to remove light oils or dirt on the parts. Britoss products are excellent cleaners and can handle light grease and oils. However, stainless steel alloys high in sulfur or carbon usually require a pretreatment in an alkaline bath such as CLEENSOL SS Degreaser. Wiping with 7-10 % Solution of CLEENSOL SS will remove Surface oil & Grease.
No. You may use any type of water for washing and rinsing. However using purified water for the final rinse bath can help avoid water-spotting issues.
Britoss Range may be used on any metal including titanium, aluminum, cobalt chrome, etc. It also works as a good brightener for copper, brass, and bronze when used as a flash cleaner. However users are asked to verify individual application suitability before using Britoss on any metal other than SS.
BRITOSS Products being acidic, will cause damage to the surfaces of concrete, Mild Steel, carbon steel, zinc, and galvanized steel. Avoid exposure of these materials to Britoss Range and rinse immediately if there is an inadvertent spill onto these materials.
Britoss Range products are NOT RECOMMENDED for MILD STEEL FABRICATIONS. Innovative Coating Industries offers RUSTOGEL 1406 for derusting of MS & GI fabrications.
